About Yaple's Stitching

For leather stitching we use the cobbler's stitch . For limited cloth stitching I may use a machine.

Below are examples of Cobbler's Stitching and Locking Stitch or Machine Stitching.

At this point all leather items are hand stitched using a cobbler's stitch . Which for leather seams is a strong stitch and if a stitch should happen to break the other thread should hold the leather together until a proper repair can be made.

Shown above is a sample of what the cobbler's stitch looks like thread 1 and thread 2 alternate sides through the leather. The beginning stitches are usually double stitched, the end stich is usually back stitched 4 stitches then tied off with the end being buried in the seam to reduce wear.

Shown above if thread 1 should get cut or break, thread 2 will hold the seam together until a proper repair can be made since both threads are under equal tension.

LOCKING STITCH ( Machine Stitch)

Below is an example of the locking stitch or machine stitch used by some makers.

The locking stitch shown here thread 2 forms a loop through which thread 1 passes the tension should be adjusted so the loop is in the middle of the seam this at times can be hard to adjust due to the slight variations within the leather. Both threads cause tension on each other to keep the seam together.

Now here thread 1 is broken this causes a loss of tension to the seam this allows the remainder of thread 1 to begin pulling back through the loops created by thread 2 next thing you know the whole seam has come apart.
